I completely agree with you! Parents should monitor their children’s internet / social media usage constantly and make sure usage doesn’t become a problem. Most social media platforms typically require users to be at least 13 to sign up (at least that was what it was like when my son was a teenager). Parents need to monitor what their children are doing (what apps they are using, sites they are visiting, research they are doing) as well as have rules they enforce regarding screen time and usage. This girl did not go onto these sites one time and become addicted to them. As a society people need to start taking personal responsibility for the situations / circumstances they create due to their actions or lack there of.
Meta’s goal is to encourage as much “screen time” as possible. May not be smart or healthy to spend as much time staring at the screen or engaging in the app but that’s the end result. Excesses occur in everyday life – food, alcohol, exercise, etc. Not sure it makes sense to sue Lay’s if I over eat chips or sue Nike if I over train and die of fatigue. However, I do not want to be flippant about suicide. This is a tragedy and these types of apps can and do create undue angst with some young children. Parents need to be aware and recognize when a unhealthy infatuation has occurred.
Not Meta’s fault in the slightest. The fault, if there is any, lays entirely on the girl and her parents.
