In California, does anyone have an opinion on their overall experiences with non-standard auto markets. We are looking to get appointed with two or three to service our non-standard auto customers.

I would suggest you get in touch with Bristol West and Arrowehead General Insurance Co. BW may be tough to get an appointment from, but if you do, they have really sensible rates for non-standards drivers.

Hope this helps!

Try Freedom General, Their rates are pretty good and they shouldn't be to hard to get an appointment with.

BTW how would I go about getting appointments with preffered companies.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Have you had any personal experience with Freedom General? I think they are writing for Sterling.

As for the Preferred if you don't have the volume requirement you can go though one of many MGAs.

Yes, I am appointed with them. Their rates are pretty competetive and their customer service hold time is usually a minute or so. They are a part of Sterling.

What MGA would you suggest, and by volume what amount do you think would be enough to get my own appointment.

Ive tried 4 to 5 but no response, I've only worked with non-standard and I don't have any connection with any preffered providers

If you are having problems getting preferred appointments try NIA in Grass Valley. They are a cluster and have great appointments like Hartford, Travelers, Kemper, First American, Encompass and more. They pay 75% to 80% commision and charge a monthly fee of $175. Once you write about 500K you should not have a problem getting direct appointments and moving your business over.

thank you Joe Agent, I looked at them before becoming and IA, the monthly fee on top of the percentage I don't like but I will keep them as an option if I cannot get appointed directly. I just got a return call from Safeco and they said that they wanted to see me with atleast one preffered before they will even consider me.
