We recently learned (the hard way) that the FEMA brains have made some rather dramatic decisions concerning coverage. The losses from Katrina and Rita got them thinking of how they could deny claims and cut their losses. These changes don't show up in the current policy language. Our underwriters at American Reliable did not even know about some of this stuff...
Did you know that a detached garage / shop, if it has a "mud room" with a toilet, sink and shower is considered by the claims department to be a "residence" now. There is no extention of coverage from the primary policy. The catch-22 is that it is not insurable as a residence by the underwriters! The claims adjustors simply say... sucks, doesn't it!"
What else has FEMA changed to save money?
