Connecticut Levies $5.9M Fine for Hole-in-One Prizes

January 6, 2009

Connecticut officials have levied a $5.9 million fine against a man who runs businesses paying for hole-in-one prizes on behalf of clients.

The state Insurance Department says Kevin Kolenda’s businesses equated to illegally offering insurance without a license.

The state says he also failed to pay hole-in-one prizes for the 2007 Travelers Championship tournament and a 2008 tournament in Trumbull.

Kolenda told The Hartford Courant that he is no longer affiliated with the companies and that the state’s allegations against him are “insane.”

He told the paper he lives part-time in Connecticut, but would not say where.

Connecticut officials say the businesses have sold or negotiated at least 41 hole-in-one contracts in the state since it first ordered him in September 2001 order to stop.
