Lawmakers OK Maine Helmet Law Change

April 22, 2009

A bill to increase the age for mandatory motorcycle helmet use in Maine has been given final approval by the Legislature and sent to Gov. John Baldacci for his signature.

The bill, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Emily Cain of Orono, would require motorcycle operators or passengers under 18 to wear protective headgear. The law currently requires helmets for those under 15.

A separate motorcycle safety bill, which would require the state to install warning signs on any state highway where centerline rumble strips are located, awaits final Senate approval now that the House has given its final OK.

A third bill, which seeks to impose a motorcycle helmet bill applying to all operators and riders, remains in committee.
