Virginia Mom of Boy Left on Bus Sues School Officials for $500K

January 20, 2012

Richmond school officials are being sued by the mother of a 4-year-old autistic boy who was left on a bus.

Nyheim Butler’s lawsuit accuses Richmond Public Schools, the district’s transportation director, a former bus driver and a former bus monitor of negligence.

The lawsuit seeks $350,000 in punitive damages and $150,000 in compensatory damages.

According to the lawsuit, Butler’s son was left on a school bus in 90-plus degree heat for about an hour on July 6, 2010.

The driver of another bus discovered the boy.

A spokesman for the school district had no comment on the lawsuit. He tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the bus driver and monitor are no longer employees of the school district.

The lawsuit was filed in Richmond Circuit Court in late December.
