Massachusetts Septic Hauler to Pay Fine to Settle Illegal Dumping Lawsuit

November 16, 2020

A Massachusetts septic hauling company has agreed to pay up to $500,000 to settle allegations that it dumped waste into a local town’s sewer system to avoid paying disposal fees.

State Attorney General Maura Healey said Friday that as part of the settlement Midstate Sewerage Company of Millbury will also be barred from seeking state or municipal contracts for two years.

State authorities accused Midstate of dumping septic waste at a municipal pump station instead of the regional treatment facility where it would be required to pay fees.

The settlement resolves a 2018 state lawsuit that alleged Midstate saved thousands of dollars through its scheme, but defrauded customers and violated state water quality laws.

A message left with Midstate was not immediately returned Friday.
