Scheffler, Climate Protesters, Lightning Strike at Travelers Golf Championship

June 24, 2024

A weather delay, a climate protest, a lightning strike and Tom Kim could not deter Scottie Scheffler on his mission to win the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship at the TPC River Highlands course.

Kim made a birdie putt on the 18th hole to tie Scheffler and force the two into a sudden death playoff, which Scheffler then won on the first hole.

The activists group Extinction Rebellion claimed responsibility for a small group of protests who disrupted the event for about 15 minutes before they were taken away by security. The Associated Press reported that the group blamed climate change for lightning strike at a home near the course on Saturday. Some of the protesters wore shirts proclaiming, “No Golf on a Dead Planet.”

Cromwell officials said firefighters responded to calls about a lightning strike and found a tree near a home along the course had been hit. Two people who were near the tree were taken to the hospital while a third declined treatment.

Scheffler was not the only big winner. The Travelers Championship donates 100% of its net proceeds to local charities. The Travelers Companies announced that the event generated a tournament record of more than $3.2 million for more than 170 nonprofits in the region. This year brings the total amount generated for charities to more than $30 million since Travelers became title sponsor in 2007.

This year’s primary beneficiary is The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a nonprofit based in Ashford, Connecticut, which serves children with serious illnesses. Other nonprofits also use the tournament as a platform to raise funds and promote their causes.
