Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky physicians have reached an agreement with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio and Kentucky stemming from lawsuits filed in 2002 against several insurers. Courts in Boone and Hamilton counties have granted preliminary approval for the $160 million settlement.
The settlement increases reimbursements physicians in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area will receive over the next three years. Additionally, $2.75 million will be used to create a charitable foundation to help recruit doctors to the area and to provide funds to bring medical care to the underserved.
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Kentucky and Ohio are subsidiaries of WellPoint, Inc., an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
Humana Inc. in 2003 was ordered to pay Tri-State physicians $100 million over three years in a partial settlement of a lawsuit filed by the doctors.
