Mich. Gov. Proclaims Oct. 22-26 Auto Theft Prevention Week

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm has deemed the week of Oct. 22-26 as “Turn Up the H.E.A.T. Week.” The purpose is to activate residents to increase their awareness of auto theft prevention measures and to report what they know about auto theft in their neighborhood. This week coincides with Help Eliminate Auto Thefts’ (H.E.A.T.) 22nd Anniversary invitation-only celebration at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Oct. 25, 2007.

According to the Gov. Granholm’s statement, since 1985, H.E.A.T. has successfully empowered Michigan’s residents to fight auto theft in their area by confidentially informing the authorities of what they know about auto theft-related crimes. By reporting auto theft tips, residents have helped H.E.A.T. recover more than $46 million in stolen property throughout the state.

H.E.A.T. is a partnership of Michigan’s auto insurance companies, law enforcement and residents of Michigan dedicated to fighting auto theft. The H.E.A.T. program encourages citizen action through a confidential, toll-free 24/7 auto theft tip line (1-800-242-HEAT) that provides financial rewards up to $10,000 to people who provide information leading to the arrest and prosecution of individuals for auto theft, auto theft-related insurance fraud and identity theft, carjacking, theft rings and chop shops.
