Ohio County Bans Texting While Driving

October 21, 2009

The county that includes Akron has become the latest area in Ohio to ban text messaging while driving.

The measure approved by the Summit County Council carries $150 fines for violators caught reading or sending text messages from behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.

It’s the first countywide texting ban in Ohio. It was proposed by County Councilman Jon Poda, who says the law will save lives and make roads safer.

The city of Cleveland has a similar ban, and proposals before the Ohio Legislature would ban texting while driving statewide.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says 18 states already have laws on the books against texting while you drive.
