Ohio Safety Instructor Had Earlier Shooting Mishap

August 23, 2013

A central Ohio woman says a certified gun safety class instructor accused of accidentally shooting a student in the arm during a demonstration was involved in a second accidental shooting decades ago.

Cathy Schmelzer tells The Columbus Dispatch she was stunned by the Aug. 10 shooting in Carroll because it involved a man who wounded her in 1977 when he fired a handgun into the air during a Halloween hayride and a bullet ricocheted.

Terry J. Dunlap Sr. wasn’t charged in that case. Authorities handling the current case haven’t decided whether to charge the former policeman, who is a Violet Township trustee. He declined to comment to the newspaper about either shooting.

The injured student, 26-year-old Michael Piemonte, says Dunlap was a good instructor but made a mistake.
