People Moves: Ryan Hired to Head Hyperexponential US P/C; Carnes Named Nationwide’s Chief Pet Officer

Insurtech hyperexponential has hired Risa Ryan as head of US P/C.

Risa was most recently chief underwriting officer at Sompo International. She will be based in New York. She has over 25 years of industry experience, having spent over a decade with Munich Re America, including as its head of strategy and analysis, as well as senior roles at Swiss Re and QBE.

Founded in 2017, the UK-based company said it now works with over 30 insurers and reinsurers across the specialty and commercial space. Risa’s appointment is part of a series of personnel developments at hyperexponential, as the company expands its office and operations in the US. Richard Gunn, chief revenue officer, will be relocating from London to New York.

Carnes Promoted to Lead Nationwide Pet

Joel Carnes

Joel Carnes is the new leader of Nationwide Pet. Carnes has served as Nationwide’s vice president of Pet’s operational excellence team for the past two years. He will report to Juan Jose (JJ) Perez, leader of Nationwide’s Corporate Solutions business.

Nationwide said it currently provides protection to more than one million pets.

Carnes brings 20 years of leadership experience to the role. Before joining Nationwide in 2022, he served as president and chief executive officer for Alliance for Innovation (AFI), a research, education and advocacy organization. In addition, Carnes has held executive leadership roles with XPRIZE and SecondMuse, as well as Disney Interactive Media Group, Walt Disney Imagineering and Activision.
