Tropical Storm Don Expected to Hit South Texas Coast Overnight

July 29, 2011

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for the Texas coast from Matagorda Island to the mouth of the Rio Grande River. The National Hurricane Center expects Tropical Storm Don to make landfall on the south Texas coast late Friday night or early Saturday morning,

Gov. Rick Perry is urging Texas residents to prepare their homes and families for the potential impact of Tropical Storm Don.

While Don is not a large storm as tropical storm systems go, it is expected to produce a storm surge of one to two feet accompanied by larger, stronger waves. As the storm moves inland across south central Texas over the weekend, there is a possibility of isolated tornadoes, strong winds and flash flooding. The NHC anticipates total rain accumulations of three to five inchase from South Texas into extreme Northeastern Mexico. Isolate maximum amounts of seven inches are possible.

At 7 a.m. on July 29, TS Don had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph with stronger gusts. It is expected to strengthen slightly before making landfall and weaken as it travels inland. Topical force winds extend outward up to 105 miles from the center, the NHC reported.
