Members of the SMU women’s rowing team have sued the school, alleging gender discrimination and negligence led to hip injuries.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Dallas, Texas on behalf of seven past and present team members. It alleges the university provided the women with fitness and training resources, coaching and medical treatment inferior to those provided its male athletes. The 46-page complaint blames inferior resources for catastrophic injuries to one or both of the women’s hips caused by “unreasonably rigorous training and practice regimen and inappropriate rowing and weightlifting techniques.”
The complaint says the women needed surgery to repair the injuries and likely face hip replacement surgeries later in their lives.
In a statement, SMU said it doesn’t comment on pending litigation but is committed to providing equal resources for male and female athletes.
