Misrepresenting collateral used to secure a loan, submitting a fraudulent insurance claim and receiving the insurance payments has netted Kyle C. Ferrell, a former Jackson, Miss. Police officer and Hinds County sheriff’s deputy 14 months in federal prison.
Ferrell submitted a fraudulent loan application and a phony insurance claim on a car he reported stolen. The actions occurred between March 2000 and March 2001.
The Jackson Clarion-Ledger reported that U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate sentenced Ferrell after a two-hour hearing on April 18.
Wingate sentenced Ferrell to 14 months on each of the charges, but they are to run concurrent. He also ordered him to make restitution of $13,822.50. He will serve five years of probation after his prison release. Ferrell must report to prison June 2.
Ferrell was a Hinds County deputy from February 2003 until April 2004, when he was terminated after being indicted on the federal charges. He had been a Precinct 2 Jackson patrolman for about four years before resigning in 2001.
Testimony at Ferrell’s trial showed he defrauded Omni Bank in March 2000 by misrepresenting the condition of the collateral, a 1994 Cadillac, for a loan he received from the bank.
In July 2000, Ferrell also defrauded State Farm Insurance Co. in July 2000 by falsely reporting the 1994 Cadillac had been stolen, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
