The teenage driver of a sport utility vehicle involved in a crash in Jefferson County, Tenn., that resulted in the death of one of her passengers faces charges of failure to yield and having no insurance, officials said.
Chelsie Nicole Brewer, 16, died in the accident around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 66 in Jefferson County.
The driver, 17-year-old Miranda Moore, reportedly attempted to make a left turn onto the highway and pulled out in front of a tractor-trailer truck, which hit the vehicle, according to police reports.
Trevor Davis and Chelsey Hackney, both 17, were also passengers in the SUV. Both Davis and Moore suffered minor injuries.
But a spokeswoman at the University of Tennessee Medical Center said Wednesday that Hackney is in surgical critical care.
Officials said it’s not clear whether all individuals were wearing seat belts.
Brewer, a student at Morristown-Hamblen High School East, was said to have been well-respected by her peers.
“She was … a good friend who would do anything for anybody,” said assistant principal Patty Sigler.
