January 6, 2010

A former customer service representative for the North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance Co. has been arrested on charges she embezzled premium payments from customers.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin reported the arrest of Sheila Carol Williams of Mayodan. Department investigators allege that between July and October 2009, Williams used her position as a customer service representative in the N.C. Farm Bureau’s Madison office to steal premiums from customers bringing in cash payments. The scheme was discovered when a customer noticed that her insurance policy was about to lapse and notified the Madison office, according to Goodwin.

Officials said the N.C. Farm Bureau has corrected any problems with customer policies. According to the arrest warrant, Farm Bureau lost nearly $3,000. Williams is charged with one count of embezzlement. She was processed at the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office and released on a written promise to appear in court on Jan. 13.
