Florida Man Gets Death Penalty for Insurance Office Murder

May 2, 2011

A Florida man has been sentenced to death for the murders of two women he doused with gasoline and set on fire during the robbery of a Nationwide Insurance office.

A Polk County judge sentenced 33-year-old Leon Davis Jr. on Friday. A jury convicted Davis in February of three counts of first-degree murder, one for each woman and a third for one woman’s prematurely born child. The same jurors voted 8-4 that Davis should die.

Prosecutors say Davis robbed a Lake Wales insurance office in December 2007. During the robbery, he poured gasoline over two employees — 26-year-old Yvonne Bustamante and 23-year-old Juanita Luciano — and set them on fire. Both died later from the burns, along with Luciano’s newborn son.
