The West Virginia Public Service Commission says 212 commercial vehicles were taken out of service as a result of recent inspections.
Violations found by PSC transportation enforcement officers included faulty brakes, lights, tires and steering mechanisms, poorly secured loads and improperly labeled hazardous materials.
The PSC says officers also cited drivers for 502 speed violations and 68 seatbelt violations.
Officers conducted 3,292 inspections, up 58 percent from 2,068 inspections conducted during the same quarter in 2014. The inspections were conducted on 10 highways designated as high crash areas.
The PSC says the inspections were funded with a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
