North Carolina Agent Charged with 13 Counts of Embezzlement

October 15, 2015

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin announced the arrest of David Maylon Pickett, Grifton, N.C.; he is charged with 13 counts of embezzlement by an insurance agent in Craven, Harnett, Lenoir, Pitt and Wayne Counties.

NCDOI criminal investigators allege Pickett received insurance premiums totaling $29,801 from 13 people across five counties for health care coverage and never applied the payments to insurance policies. The alleged embezzlement occurred between November 2014 and September 2015.

Pickett turned himself in to Pitt County on Oct. 12 and was placed under a $180,000 bond. Grifton Police Department assisted in the search for Pickett.

NCDOI employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud. Since Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin took office in 2009, criminal investigators have made more than 1,500 arrests, resulting in more than 750 criminal convictions with more than 250 cases currently pending court. These efforts have delivered more than $72.1 million in restitution and recoveries for victims.

An estimated 10 cents of every dollar paid in premiums goes toward the payment of fraudulent claims.
