North Carolina Man Charged with Insurance Fraud Over Stolen Boat Claim

December 1, 2015

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin announced the arrest of William Nathan Spaulding, 38, of Lake Waccamaw; he is charged with one count each of insurance fraud, obtaining property by false pretense and providing false statements on an application for insurance.

North Carolina Department of Insurance criminal investigators accuse Spaulding of fraudulently obtaining $34,900 from Seaworthy Insurance in January 2015 by falsely claiming his boat, trailer and other fishing equipment had been stolen while returning from Lake Santee, S.C. Investigators allege Spaulding was not in Lake Santee and made fraudulent statements concerning his prior insurance claims history.

Spaulding was arrested on Nov. 29 and placed under a $2,500 bond.

Anyone who bought any boating or fishing equipment from Spaulding should contact the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division.

The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud. Since Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin took office in 2009, criminal investigators have made more than 1,500 arrests, resulting in more than 750 criminal convictions with more than 250 cases currently pending court. These efforts have delivered more than $72.1 million in restitution and recoveries for victims.
