Swett & Crawford, CalChamber Offer Employment Practices Liability Insurance

April 2, 2009

Atlanta-based Swett & Crawford, a provider of specialty employment practices liability coverage, and the California Chamber of Commerce (CalChamber), announced the availability of an enhanced EPL insurance policy that focuses on prevention of claims.

EPL+ is a California-specific program that includes preferred membership in CalChamber, access to its human resources and employment law Web site, and unlimited access to its employment law helpline.

In addition to coverage with limits of $500,000, $1 million and $2 million, the program provides a free one-hour employee handbook audit by a participating member of the Cal Chamber HRConsultant Network in locales where such expertise is available, as well as free software for creating an employee handbook, if the prospective policyholder does not have one.

The coverage protects against employment-related claims; insuring the entity as well as all full-time, part-time, temporary, leased, seasonal and independent contractors working exclusively for the insured; third-party coverage; wage and hour, and serious and willful misconduct defense cost sublimit; illegal alien investigation defense costs; and full prior acts coverage are automatically included.

The coverage is designed for small- to medium-sized companies (two to no more than 100 employees) who have not downsized by more than 25 percent in the past two years, and who have never had an employment-related claim or incident.

Jason White, practice leader of Swett & Crawford’s Professional Services Group, said of the program, “The combination of Swett’s knowledge and expertise in EPL Coverage and CalChamber’s extensive capabilities in supporting best employment practices with superlative tools and consul, give California-based companies powerful allies in combating these claims. EPL claims often lead to expensive litigation and damage to a company’s reputation, but by focusing on preventing these types of incidents before they happen, and also protecting themselves with this fully featured insurance, CalChamber members can do business more easily”.

California business executives interested in the program should contact their insurance broker. Retail insurance brokers should contact their local Swett & Crawford office.
