N. Idaho Train Derailment Blamed On Soggy Ground

April 2, 2012

A Union Pacific spokesman says a southbound train derailed eight miles north of Sandpoint in northern Idaho after saturated soil gave way beneath a 350-foot section of track.

Aaron Hunt says no hazardous materials spilled in the derailment involving 14 cars on Saturday, but six cars spilled some soybeans.

Hunt told the Coeur d’Alene Press no one was injured. He says it will take time to get the cars back on the tracks, but didn’t give an estimate.

Bonner County received a record 7.88 inches of rain in March.
